On the morning of October 31st, 2020 one of our probationary members attended a “March to the Polls” organized by Justice for the Next Generation, an organization dedicated to racial and economic equality. Several figures within the fight for racial equality were present, including the family of George Floyd. The event had obtained the necessary permits to assemble that were required.
As of the writing of this statement there are no allegations or evidence of violence or rioting. Despite this, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office and the Graham Police Department deployed chemical agents against the crowd multiple times. This has been confirmed by social media posts from the event, as well as our members firsthand accounts.
In this time of unprecedented division, it is vital that we understand and take advantage of our right to protest issues of inequality that are inherent in our society. We must also step up and call out those who attempt to restrict those rights.
Today’s use of force was unacceptable behavior for any law enforcement agency that claims to be community focused and is antithetical to the values we hold dear as Americans.
We therefore ask that the law enforcement agencies involved publicly disclose the justifications for their use of force, as well as the rationale that was used to arrive at the decision to deploy chemical agents against a peaceful crowd that included children and senior citizens.
We will do everything in our power as an organization to advocate for equality. We will defend the rights of Americans to exist in a country free from hate and bigotry. To all of those who are living in fear, we see you, and we are here for you. For those who are the oppressors, please know that society’s use for you is decreasing by the minute, and we look forward to the day you are relegated to the dust bin of history.
